Tooth Sensitivity

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Our dentists have noticed more and more patients are complaining of sensitive teeth when attending their routine examination. There are many factors which contribute towards sensitivity. These could include:

. Improper tooth brushing technique. The gums may recede through overbrushing with the wrong toothbrush technique. We would recommend a soft to medium toothbrush with a small head, brushing in small circular motions. Do not be tempted to brush when using an electric toothbrush, they are designed to do the work for you.

. Acidic foods/drinks. Over consumption can cause acid erosion which will make the teeth sensitive. Such foods and drinks are advised at meal times. We also advise to reduce snacking throughout the day as this would prevent the frequency of an acid attack.

. Age causing the gums to naturally recede

There are desensitizing products avaliable to purchase such as toothpastes and mouthwashes. Your dentist will be able to advise you on the most suitable product for your individual needs.
